The Columbus Fire Marshal’s Office: Inspections and Alarm Finals

The City of Columbus Fire Marshal enforces the fire code, reviews plans before permits are issued and inspects fire protection systems. City reports list fire alarm finals and remodel inspections among the office’s work. If you are opening a space, remodeling or changing a life-safety system, check the City’s process for your project before you request a final.

We do not replace the City’s review. Our job is to get your alarm system ready for it. A system that has already been inspected, tested and repaired is far less likely to stall your project on final inspection day.

Before you request a final, we can help you with four things:

  • Alarm function check: we test the system and identify deficiencies.
  • Repairs: we complete the alarm repairs the check turns up.
  • Records: we organize inspection and service documentation.
  • Handoff: we prepare paperwork for the owner or general contractor.

For questions about the City’s own process, call Columbus City Hall at (979) 732-2366 and ask for the Fire Marshal. Then book your alarm inspection or repair with us first, so any problems are fixed before the City arrives.

Hood Suppression for Restaurants and Travel Stops on I-10

Restaurants, diners and travel stop kitchens along the I-10 corridor deal with grease, high heat and open flame every shift. When a hood suppression system is overdue, it can fail an inspection or fail to work when a fire starts. Either one can shut the kitchen down.

NFPA 17A calls for wet chemical kitchen suppression systems to be inspected every six months. Your insurer and the City may add their own requirements, so keep your service dates and records current.

During a restaurant fire suppression system inspection, our technician checks the detection components, the agent cylinders, the nozzles over each appliance and any connected fuel or power shutoffs. We service ANSUL, Amerex, Pyro-Chem and Kidde kitchen systems.

Hood cleaning and suppression inspection are two different jobs. Keep a separate record for each, especially after a system discharge, an equipment change or any repair work.

Is your system due, discharged or newly installed? Call (713) 223-9181 and we will schedule the evaluation.

Fire Extinguishers for Fuel Stations, Convenience Stores and Shops

Fuel stations, convenience stores, service bays, shop floors and kitchens all carry different fire risks, so each needs different extinguishers. A kitchen with cooking oil needs a different unit than a workshop or a room full of electrical equipment. Our fire extinguisher service covers inspection, maintenance, sales, recharge and replacement.

Our technicians look at what you already have and what could burn at your location. Then we recommend the right type, whether that is ABC, BC, CO2, Type K or Halotron.

A practical upkeep schedule looks like this:

  • Monthly: your staff checks access, pressure, damage and the service tag.
  • Annually: a licensed provider completes the annual extinguisher inspection and maintenance.
  • Every six years or at hydrostatic test intervals: internal maintenance and hydrostatic testing come due based on extinguisher type.

Need inspection, recharge or replacement for a Colorado County location? Call (713) 223-9181 and we will scope the work with you.

Fire Protection for Aggregate and Oil-and-Gas Operations

According to the Texas State Historical Association, Colorado County’s economy was dominated by agribusiness, sand and gravel extraction, and oil and gas in 1980, and agribusiness and oil-field services and equipment manufacturing were key sectors in the early 2000s. Fire protection for sites like these has to match the equipment and hazards on each property.

We provide extinguisher service, fire alarm inspection and repair, and emergency lighting inspection for businesses like these. Call us with your equipment list and we will tell you what we can service.
